Martin Luther King Jr. Day takes place every year on the third Monday in January and is a nationally recognized day of service. This day, all are encouraged to take part in a day of service to aid and boost their own communities.
The MLK Day of Service was first observed in 1994 after Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act. This event falls the day after Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday to honor his work in the Civil Rights Movement and his dedication to his own community.
Martin Luther King Jr. was one of the most prominent civil rights leaders in the 1950’s and 60’s. He believed in “The Beloved Community”. The Beloved Community was his idea of unity through achievable goals by the masses. This idea is the call to action for everyone in the nation and the MLK Day of Service was founded on this principle.
